Your friend asks how your mom is doing, and you tell her she's doing well.
Because, well…
She is.
Then you hear yourself add two more words.
Right now.
You feel it before you can call it what it is.
A small pause, half a beat, where you almost say it plainly…
But don't.
You didn't decide to say that, either.
It just came out.
The same way a habit shows up before you notice you have one.
“She's doing well right now.”
Not just: “She's doing well.”
There's a difference, and some part of you has been making that distinction for months without asking the rest of you for permission first.
The words you didn't choose
You don't remember agreeing to talk this way.
But you've been doing it for a while.
They've been stable becomes they've been stable so far.
Everything's fine becomes everything's fine today.
The qualifier… ”today”… isn't dramatic.
Nobody on the other end of the phone call even notices it.
But you notice it…
After the fact…
The way you notice you've re-read her last text twice before realizing you already knew what it said.
Your friend tells you… assumes that you must finally be able to relax a little.
You agree with her out loud.
I mean, six weeks is SIX weeks.
Yet, you still check your phone between meetings.
You still flinch a little at a number you don't recognize.
Nothing on your checklist actually needs attention today, and you run through it anyway.
The same list you run during the hard weeks, just quieter.
She's recalibrating off the same information you have.
Nothing has happened in six weeks.
But you're working from a longer memory, the one where nothing happening for weeks turned out to mean something different than everyone assumed at the time.
Stability, for you, stopped being a conclusion.
It became a status update: something to constantly check rather than a sign that it’s okay to finally let your guard down.
The file everyone else already closed
Your sibling stopped calling for updates two weeks ago, because there was nothing to update.
Your coworker stopped asking.
The questions dried up the same way they always do once things go quiet, and nobody meant anything by it.
They're just responding to what's in front of them, the way you would if you were standing where they're standing.
But the reality is…
You're NOT standing where they're standing.
You're still holding the version of this where a good stretch ended on a random Tuesday you weren't prepared for:
A fall.
An unplanned trip to the ER with chest pain that turned out to be heartburn, not a heart attack.
Nobody disagrees with you about that out loud.
I mean… there's nothing to disagree with.
You're just running your own private recalculation on a file everyone else already closed, and there isn't a version of this week where you get to close it with them.
You don't need to resolve which one of you has it right.
The gap between what she sees and what you're still carrying isn't a disagreement to settle.
It's just where you are this week, and probably next week too.
Maybe.

A deeply personal account of caring for aging parents that captures the uncertainty, emotional ambiguity, and quiet vigilance that often continue even during the calm stretches.
Sometimes the hardest part isn't what happened today.
It's what today's calm couldn't quite convince you of.
And, while understanding the experience doesn't make it disappear…
It reminds you that you're not imagining it, and you're certainly not the only one living this way.
