The cardiologist left a message on a Tuesday afternoon.
The primary care office doesn't have the records from that appointment.
The pharmacy is working from a list that hasn't been updated in three months.

From the outside, it looks like things are working.
And they ARE working.
Barely.
That’s the part that’s easy to miss.
All of that attention, all of those details held in your head at once, and the proof that it’s happening is that nothing goes wrong.
The right medication gets filled.
The appointment is on the calendar.
The form gets signed.
The work disappears into the outcome.
And that layer of awareness, the one that doesn’t turn off…
The one that stays running even when nothing is actively happening, though something could come up…
That part doesn’t show up anywhere.
Not in any system.
Not in anyone’s accounting of what this costs.
It just stays with you.
Quiet.
Continuous.
